Under Italian wine law DOCG is the highest designation of quality among Italian wines. DOCG stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin, DOCG).

The next highest quality level is Denominazione di Origine Controllata, or DOC, which means “designation of controlled origin.” There are 329 different DOCs in Italy, which cover many types of wine,including the sparkling wine Prosecco.

I.G.T.

(Indicazione Geografica Tipica) designations allow foreign grape varieties to be added. It is used most famously in Tuscany with the addition like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to Chianti Classico. It is now in every Italian region except Piedmont.
